Australian navy intercepts asylum seekers

Published on 28 June 2009 - 1:31pm
More about:

The Australian navy has intercepted a boat carrying 194 suspected asylum seekers near Christmas Island. The passengers have been taken to the island, an Australian possession near Java, for health and identity checks.

The interception is the 15th so far this year. Most of the asylum seekers are from Iraq, Afghanistan or Sri Lanka. They usually pay Javan people smugglers to bring them to Australia.
