The military junta in Myanmar has passed new election laws which will make it impossible for opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi to take part in the next elections.
The laws forbid prisoners from standing for election or even being a member of a political party. This means the National League for Democracy will have to expel her, or face being disbanded itself. The party is still considering its next move.
So far, no date has been set for elections in Myanmar, but it is thought likely to be October or November. Ms Suu Kyi will probably not be released from house arrest until that time.
Apart from the 2000 or so political prisoners in Myanmar, the new laws also ban members of religious orders, such as Buddhist monks, from taking part in elections.
