AU imposes sanctions on Madagascar

Published on 17 March 2010 - 7:38pm
More about:

The African Union has imposed sanctions on Madagascan leader Andry Rajoelina and more than 100 members of his regime.

Mr Rajoelina, who seized power in 2009, has failed to implement a power-sharing agreement with ousted president Marc Ravalomanana intended to resolve Madagascar's political crisis.

The sanctions include travel bans and freezing foreign-held assets.

Analysts say the sanctions are mostly symbolic and will achieve little as long as Mr Rajoelina is supported by the army.

In the capital Antananarivo, supporters of Mr Ravalomanana took to the streets to mark the first anniversary of the coup against the former president.

Police used teargas to disperse the protesters.
