Arnhem has won the award for "Greenest city of Europe".
The town in the eastern province of Gelderland won the Entente Florale 2009 after defeating ten other European cities, including Cardiff in the UK, Weimar in Germany, Nieuwpoort in Belgium and Dundalk in Ireland, which won silver medals. The jury praised Arnhem's location, its many parks and the fact that its inhabitants actually use them. The village of Sluis, in Zeeland, won a silver medal in the category of greenest village of Europe. Last year Arnhem and Sluis also won as greenest town and village.
