In a raid on the home of the powerful Philippine Ampatuan family, police have found a large number of arms and ammunition.
The clan is believed to be responsible for a bloodbath more than a week ago, in which 57 people were killed. Among the dead were relatives of a political rival of the Ampatuan family, Esmael Mangudadatu.
Local mayor, Andal Ampatuan junior, was arrested last week on suspicion of involvement in the massacre. The mayor was due to run for office as governor of Manguindanao against Esmael Mangudadatu next year. No arrests were made during the raid.
Until recently, Andal Ampatuan senior, current governor of the province of Maguindanao, enjoyed the support of President Gloria Arroyo. She has now washed her hands of him.
Mr Ampatuan ruled the province with the help of a private army. Many of his relatives were given important positions in the provincial government.
