Armenian president in Turkey

Published on 14 October 2009 - 8:52pm
More about:

Armenian President Serzh Sarkisian has visited Turkey just a few days after the two countries signed a treaty agreeing to normalise relations.

Mr Sarkisian attended a Football World Cup qualifying match between Turkey and Armenia. Before the game, he had a meeting with his Turkish counterpart Abdullah Gül.

The two countries have not have normal relations for decades because of the alleged massacre during the First World War of 1.5 million ethnic Armenians under the Ottoman Empire, the precursor of modern Turkey.
