The Argentinian composer and pianist Ariel Ramírez has died at the age of 88.

He was best known for his 1964 Misa Criolla, a mass for tenor, chorus and orchestra, based on folk genres with Andean influences and instruments. It was one of the first masses not celebrated in Latin following the lifting of a ban on modern languages by the Second Vatican Council. Another well-known composition is his Mass for peace and justice, which he completed in 1981. Some of his pieces were sung and recorded by renowned performers such as Plácido Domingo, José Carreras and Mercedes Sosa.
