Antillean Prime Minister Emily de Jongh-Elhage is pleased that the Dutch parliament has adopted legislation guaranteeing the political restructuring of the Dutch Antilles. She had feared precious time would be lost if the legislation were not passed.

The prime minister was particularly pleased that a proposed amendment of the Police Act has been toned down. Initially the Christian Democrats, the Labour Party and the conservative VVD wanted the Netherlands to maintain far-reaching powers over serious crime in the Dutch Antilles, which often spills into the Netherlands itself. Now the joint Dutch-Antilles Police Unit on the Antilles will take over this task.
