People across the world are marking today as the international day against racism.
The United Nations chose 21 March as it is the anniversary of the Sharpville massacre in South Africa. Exactly 50 years ago, South African police opened fire on thousands of unarmed anti-apartheid demonstrators.
Sixty-nine people died and 180 were injured. The bloodbath led to numerous demonstrations up and down the country.
Sharpville will be commemorated in South Africa during church services today.
In the Netherlands, anti-racism day events are being held in a number of cities. In Rotterdam a festival under the name Unity is Strength is being held and on Dam Square in Amsterdam a Dutch anti-racism organisation is holding a rally.
