Annan gives Kenyan crisis names to ICC

Published on 9 July 2009 - 2:35pm
More about:

Former United Nations secretary-general Kofi Annan has passed a number of names of public figures in Kenya to the International Criminal Court in The Hague. They are suspected of being behind the country's post-election violence at the end of 2007.

The rioting and clashes involving gangs, in which at least 1300 people were killed, are thought to have been orchestrated by political parties. However, so far, no one has been brought to justice.

Mr Annan was instrumental in bringing a government of national unity to power after the crisis. He is in favour of those responsible for the violence facing trial in Kenya itself but, as no tribunal has yet been set up there, is approaching the ICC.
