Angry Easter Islanders block airport

Published on 17 August 2009 - 9:17pm
More about:

Dozens of Easter Island residents have blocked the island's only airport for several hours in protest against the pollution and crime caused by the tourists. Around 600 tourists were affected by the action.

The blockade at Mataveri airport was lifted after the authorities promised to better regulate tourism on the island in the future.

Easter Island, which belongs to Chile, attracts around 50,000 tourists every year. They mainly want to see the maoi, which are statues of huge monolithic human figures, listed by UNESCO on as one of its World Heritage sites.
