The Angolan parliament has adopted a new constitution bringing an end to direct presidential elections. In future, the head of state will be elected by the largest parliamentary party.
President José Eduardo dos Santos' MPLA party (the Popular Movement for the Liberation of Angola) has held a majority in parliament for decades. He has been in office since 1979.
The constitution vote was boycotted in protest by the main opposition party, UNITA (the National Union for the Total Independence of Angola). It argues that the changes mean the end of democracy.
Under the new constitution, the prime minister's function is taken over by the vice president, who is appointed by the president.
