Amsterdammer tackles Fox News

Published on : 31 July 2009 - 4:05pm | By RNW English section (Photo: YouTube)
More about:

A 25-year-old man from Amsterdam has placed a video on YouTube putting United States television station Fox News in its place. In an edition of The O'Reilly Factor, Fox News called the Netherlands a disaster area where everything that is 'reprehensible ' - drugs, sex, euthanasia, same-sex marriage - had become the norm.

Amsterdam was labelled a 'cesspool of corruption, prostitution and crime' in the programme.

The Amsterdammer, Robert Nieuwenhuijs, a former student at the city's Film Academy, took up the challenge. The video he placed on YouTube in response to the O'Reilly slurs attracted almost 200,000 viewers in only five days.

'I just couldn't accept Amsterdam being be portrayed in such a negative way', he said in Amsterdam newspaper Het Parool. 'There's been so much negative news on Amsterdam in international media, I thought it just had to stop'.

Click on the YouTube clip below to see Mr Nieuwenhuijs's response (this clip includes original footage of The O'Reilly Show).

So you want to eat far better, proper? Should you be addicted to Twinkies along with Bon-Bons, not accepting on your own the posh regarding Twinkies and Bon Bons certainly won't function, it doesn't matter how logical in which option seems for your requirements during the time. Rather, start off when you eat less of these. Test substituting these with other items that you just appreciate that could be a much more healthful and also take small steps to getting rid of the products out of your diet plan gradually.

I think the best drug rehab center in the world is Narconon Vista Bay. They have a sauna where you sweat out all the toxins from your body and then they teach you how to live happily, free from guilt and shame.

Just skimming these comments it appears there is lots of anger and extreme opinions out there. My recent stay in Amsterdam was the best. I disagree with the negative comments in the TV program. What O'Reilly and guests had to say was news to me, obviously for the most part untrue. Americans will not believe any such subjective opinions just because a TV personality looking for ratings and controversy says so.

rogger 8 December 2010 - 1:19pm

Well, it's easier to talk about others problems than your problems, I get it. Still, I don't think Fox News built their news out of nothing. Legalized drugs and prostitution in Amsterdam did make the place attractive for dealers and traffickers, we can't deny that. Maybe there's no anarchy in Amsterdam but keeping drug use under control seems like a better option, but that's just my opinion.

It may be not easy to begin the journey of life a truly healthy way of life, but it is possible my good friend. The thing stopping you is basically that you. Nonetheless, prior to deciding to jump right within you ought to understand that extraordinary alterations are usually damaging on the course of action. You do not want to drive your self excessive at first greater than you are able to handle and also end up dropping the idea totally. That is why it is always recommended that you should make modest, steady changes on your everyday life-style practices.

I just wanted to apologize for Fox News and Bill O'Reilly, as he does not represent the USA nor does he represent the populist view in the USA, nor my views as an American citizen. Fox TV represents less than 15% of the population, less than 15%. A group of people with marginal, limited and racial perceptions on most all races, countries and opinions that are not in accord with theirs.

Nothing said by Bill O'Reilly is taken seriously in the United States, as it is not based on facts but rather his perception of the facts, his opinion. He is not important. He is always offensive. He is also disliked in the USA. This is not new. He offends his own people as well as others. He is paid by his group to continue fostering ignorance and hate among the few that bother to listen. Fox is the TV station for the undereducated and uninformed masses. Less than 15%.

You have wasted your time in giving him a minute of your time. As an American citizen I can tell you most americans will laugh or flip the channel when O'Reilly, Limbaugh, Hannity are on the air, as these people use their education to foster and feed the ignorant and the religious extreme conservatives with their outdated, racial, hateful and limited perceptions wrapped in a cloth of religious morality.

when drugs were forbidden and penalties high, drugs were very expensive and only heroin available.

It is like alcohol: you start with beer and wine. then some go to whisky and then some become alcoholics.
If only strong booze is available then you have more alcoholics.

some start with cannabis, of those some will use cocaine and of those latter only some will become addicts.
if there is only heroin there will be more addicts.

more addicts means more crime ( more cars broken open and radio's stolen, more insurance claims, rising costs of insurance policies and more taxes because we have to build more prisons )

I am happy to be dutch. I am not paying any taxes, but americans do wherever they live on this planet.

O'Reilly, attack dog for international financial-slime spreader Rupert Murdoch, often reveals his abnormalitdy as a sadistically obsessive control freak dangerous to himself and others by virtually crying fire in crowded theatres, and he is just a dog. O'Reilly's master is the apotheosis of evil who will soon be burning in Hell.

Thank you , God bless the Netherlands, let freedom ring in Amsterdam. Amsterdam was not cursed by the great satan PRESIDENT NIXON, who prostituted the office of the president for the good of corporate giants Such as MERCK drug company, so instead of National Health Care, we receive a great screwing in the form of the HMO. Then he removed the gold standard from our dollar. Then instead of giving most favored nation trading status to a great Democracy like the Netherlands, He visits HITLERS EVIL TWIN brother in Red CHINA who tortured raped and murdered his way thru tibet. and gives most favored nation trading to the gangster of communist/capitalism I wish RUSH LIMBAUGH, AND BILL OREILLY would be sentence to life in DETROIT now that all our factorys are in china. PS Remember boys an girls in GOD WE TRUST CONGRESS & CHINA SUCK!

...ahhh, just typically American again. They can make news out of BS and the typical American doesn't know any better than to believe what they are told when told by another American on TV. Majority of them don't know where Canada is and they don't have a clue where Amsterdam is either. Most of them don't know where anything is beyond 2 city blocks away. But, they rise to challenge and you can bet your last euro, all yuall in Amsterdam will now get a whole lot more American tourists looking for fun in casinos and bingo halls, sitting in buses (too big or medically unfit to walk). Heck, they'll board the bus in Schipol and as the bus driver announces arrival in Amsterdam, one of them will come to life and blirt out "What -are we in Paris again?"
Hiram 10 November 2009 - 5:34pm
Andries uit Canada, you stated "Heck, they'll board the bus in Schipol and as the bus driver announces arrival in Amsterdam, one of them will come to life and blirt out "What -are we in Paris again?" Isn't Amsterdam a suburb of Paris? Sort of like Canada being a suburb of the U.S., right? Being a Canadian and most likely from the Netherlands, you probally heard the joke "What do urine samples and Canadian beer have in common? The taste." Anyways, Amsteradam and Paris are a lot like Canadian beer. The taste of sin in both cities are so much alike, I can see why "one" of a bus load would blirt out ""What -are we in Paris again?" At least he/she can see the comparison in the intrinsic nature of the two cities and therefore confused. Amsterdam and Paris are just like Sodom and Gomorrah, therefore don't fault a poor American for thinking he was in Paris, again. Be nice, okay and have a g'day!

FOX NEWS is so narrow minded to even have News in the title is insane. Not all Americans listen to the stuff they try to pass off as news. Unfortunately, it sells, mostly to those who don't take the time or make the effort to research the news or opposing views. It has become easier to blame others and thats what many do.
Alex-p 11 October 2009 - 9:48am
do not agree with that at all. i was just in amsterdam, for 3 days and it was a great city. loved it. didn't get any crime while i was there, people were all nice and friendly.. the americans dont like it because it HAS worked and they cant seem to accept it... but i was JUST there yesterday and it was a buzzing city. amazing, beautiful cultured... so im telling everyone that this is a lie.. dont let it put you off. i was there i really enjoyed it , its a cool city.. and i completely disagree with what this is saying .... a great city a great system , it works. the americans are scared because this system does actually work and they dont like it so they will tell lies to put off anyone from going there. but the people where cool, the city is cool. a great place to go visit i defiantly would recommend going there

It seems to me that O'Reilly has been smoking a little too much weed himself to come up with this B.S. Shut up O'Reilly!, you don´t know what the hell you are talking about.
David 22 August 2009 - 3:01am
Bill is an ass? Fox News is a joke? I have listened to Radio Netherlands since the mid-1970s...but NO MORE. You are the ass for not admitting that Amsterdam has legalized prostitution and drug use, and that Dutch laws are very liberal. If Radio Netherlands won't tell people the truth then someone has to paint the real picture. many people say they hate Fox News, yet it's by far the highest rated news network in the USA, much higher than CNN or anyone else. Amsterdam may be a nice city and Holland a nice country, but it's extreme in it's liberal views. I saw the story about Amsterdam on Fox and I think the point is, if moral values are on the decline, then so is the country. I am now a former RNW listener. Good luck to you.
Andries uit Canada 10 November 2009 - 5:51pm
David, sorry for your luck. Don't get so emotional. Foxes News, wow, 5 minutes of commercials and 1 minute of a story called news. Not good that Fox is highest rating - okay, kind of supports the global view of the average American. Americans, they tend to believe and never question what they are told and "HEY, can all yuall just tell me where is the closest All You Can Eat Buffet"? One thing they can do well that tends to be accepted - spend money thay don't have. Gally, isn't that what it's all about? So Bill & Fox, did a great job promoting American tourism in Amsterdam - here they come, warm up the buses, dust off the slot machines, put on a good custume and make sure you have something to sell.
Bucho 17 August 2009 - 5:08pm
Typical American judgment, if you are not doing the American way, its wrong! When will this country finally get with the picture? Europe is years ahead of America, they are the adults while the USA stays the teenage bullys!
Anonymous 9 August 2009 - 6:46pm
What everyone seems to be missing and its' no surprise, in comparing Holland to the USA is like apples to oranges and not even on the same map. We have a right to carry guns, the Dutch do not. Before your borders were open you needed a passport/I.D. to travel within Europe, we have 50 States and have never had to show any I.D. to travel from one State to the other. We have 325 million people with appro. 25 million illegals, we think, the Dutch have how many millions? I know how the truth hurts but the facts are clear, FOX NEWS has been the #1 news source in the USA for the last 7 years and O'Reily is their #1 watched show. Do the math!
Lester Ness 8 August 2009 - 12:52pm
Any reply from O'Reilly or Fox (in the henhouse) News?
Dutchman 6 August 2009 - 9:18pm
I´ve lived in the USA, Belgium, Netherlands, Singapore, Argentina and the Philipines. Traveled almost everywhere else. Amsterdam is beautiful, wonderful, tourist-friendly, relatively safe with one of the best airports of the world! And yes: there are people in Amsterdam who use drugs and visit prostitutes just like in any other big city in the world (except the USA???????). I found the commentaries of the two females particularly disturbing. They showed a pathetic lack of knowledge on the subject with a frightening, narrow minded, trigger happy judgemental opinion. And mind you: one is a Ph.D. and the other is a republican strategist! Where did THEY go to school? Really scary people!
johnny123456 6 August 2009 - 3:56pm
If there was an award for blatant ignorance in broadcasting, it should go to OReilly / FOX news, and the propoganda they pump out is nothing more than sensationalist, irresponsible crap, designed to attract more viewers. (Good luck with that.) Studies all confirm that Mr. Nieuwenhuijs is correct. In addition, more Dutch kids quit using because they get BORED with it! Even the younger generation is smart enough to know prohibition IS the gateway drug. Didn't the USA learn anything at all in the 1920's?! Apparently not. FOX you should go off the air because you're wasting air-time with bad information!
AnonymousROBERT 6 August 2009 - 12:44am
I don't know about failings of Amsterdam society, but the display of gross ignorance by the voice of Fox News Oreilly when ever he opens his mouth assures me that what ever the fairy tale to come will be just that! Afairey tale. My guess is that Europeans are rarely subjected to the drivel from Fox news so they are surprised when the strange tales emerge. All north Americans can if they wish subscribe to these strange speeches, and we who do not listen to him/them. Whenever he displays their ignorance some sane person will send the most inane comments to various news groups, which is where I find them. Oreilly is a buffoon, who does not even know what 'NEWS' really is. Many more people consider him to be a joke, and of course their true fans ( not as many) add to the levity that we enjoy. I can hope that Dutch citizens realize that this network and the on air personalities should be looked upon as humour providers. Most of us in North American do just that. ROBERT
