Amsterdam City Council is to face prosecution for its part in the Probo Koala toxic waste case.
The Probo Koala cargo ship set sail from the Dutch capital in 2006 carrying the waste which was later dumped in Ivory Coast. An Amsterdam court ruled the Dutch authorities could not prosecute the council, but this ruling has been overturned by the Supreme Court.
Amsterdam will now be taken to court for the illegal disposal of dangerous waste. Part of the toxic cargo was initially accepted for processing by Amsterdam Port Services. However, the company eventually decided not to accept the waste and pumped it back into the ship's hold.
Amsterdam Port Services, the Probo Koala's captain and the cargo ship's owner, the Trafigura company, are also facing prosecution for their parts in the affair.
