A report by human rights organisation Amnesty International (AI) says many Darfuri women and girls living in refugee camps in Chad have been raped over the last few years.
The AI report says UN forces and Chadian police, who were trained by the UN, are doing little to protect the women and girls from sexual violence by teachers, other refugees, soldiers, family members, people from the surrounding area and in some cases aid workers.
Many women and girls are attacked when they go outside the camps to collect water of firewood. Women living in the camp say that the UN forces assigned to protect them in many cases unable to protect themselves. It is not known how many were women and girls have been raped as many do not report sexual violence as they fear social exclusion.
Around 260,000 Darfuri refugees are living in 12 refugee camps in eastern Chad. A UN mission has been stationed in the area since 2007. Amnesty International has called on the Chadian authorities and the international community to take action to protect the vulnerable women and girls.
