Algerian football victory leaves 14 dead

Published on 20 November 2009 - 6:12pm
More about:

Fourteen people have been killed in traffic accidents in Algeria during rallies held to welcome the country's football team after winning in Wednesday's World Cup qualifier against Egypt.

Some 250 others were injured during the celebrations. Thousands of fans gave the team a rapturous welcome at Algiers' airport. The team were later driven through the capital in an open coach. Due to the intense rivalry between the two countries, the match was played on neutral ground in Sudan. Algeria's victory sparked riots in the Egyptian capital Cairo, where football fans tried to attack the Algerian embassy. The rioters burned Algerian flags and set fire to Algerian shops.
