Albanian cops slain arresting fugitive

Published on 8 August 2009 - 4:29pm
More about:

In Albania, four police officers were killed as they attempted to arrest the country's most-wanted criminal at a coastal resort. Dritan Dajti was sentenced to 20 years in jail for killing a businessman in 1999 but escaped from custody in 2003.

Police officers had finally managed to track Dajti down and surrounded his automobile. However, Dajti opened fire as soon as he saw the officers, killing four of them. Dajti was injured in the gun battle and is now in custody. One of his accomplices was killed.

Six bystanders were injured and eyewitnesses say the gun battle on the beach severely traumatised holidaymakers. Albanian Prime Minister Sali Berisha has declared today is a day of national mourning for the slain officers.
