The parliamentary elections in Albania have passed without incident. According to the electoral college there were no irregularities and no reports of violence.
More than three million Albanians voted for a new parliament today. Exit polls indicate Prime Minister Sali Berisha's Democratic Party will win 44 percent of the vote, followed by Mayor of Tirana Edi Rama's Socialist Party with 39 percent. The official results are expected tomorrow.
The election is an important test for Albania which only joined NATO three months ago and wants to join the EU. Since the fall of the Stalinist regime in 1991, there have been seven elections in Albania. Each has been overshadowed by violence. EU monitors closely observed the polling.
