Nearly 200 passengers of an Air France plane which crashed in Toronto in August 2005 will receive a total of 8 million euros in compensation. A judge in Canada ruled that each passenger would receive around 40,000 euros.
The airplane slid off the runway into a ditch and caught fire while landing at Toronto airport.
Around 60 passengers were forced to jump from the plane as the emergency escape chutes did not work. All 297 passengers and 12 crew survived, but 33 people were injured when they jumped from the burning plane.
The French airline will pay most of the compensation. The plane's manufacturer Airbus and the manufacturer of the chutes will pay the rest.
Some of the passengers had already reached an out-of-court settlement with the airline and others took no legal action.
