AI report reveals police violence in Indonesia

Published on 24 June 2009 - 10:06am
More about:

In a report on human rights in Indonesia out today, Amnesty International says police still torture and abuse suspects on a large scale.

Amnesty says police violence is still an everyday occurrence in spite of promises to end it. The human rights organisation bases its claims on interviews with police officers, lawyers and victims of police violence. The researchers found that vulnerable groups such as drug addicts and prostitutes were most likely to be targeted. They would be offered better treatment in exchange for sex.

Amnesty International wants Jakarta to recognise the problem and launch an independent investigation. Although Indonesia has signed the international UN treaty against torture, it does not have any laws forbidding it.
