Afghan parliament rejects 17 ministers

Published on 2 January 2010 - 5:40pm
More about:

The Afghan parliament has rejected 17 of the 24 ministerial candidates put forward by President Hamid Karzai.

One of them is Ismail Khan, a controversial warlord, who has fought against both the former Soviet Union and the Taliban. He used to be energy minister, but will not be able to return to the post. Other candidates, like the Minister of Defence Abdul Rahim, will remain in office.

President Karzai has not yet nominated anyone as foreign minister. He is under huge pressure from his Western allies to find ministers who will fight corruption.
