A study group headed by Tilburg mayor Ruud Vreeman recommends that bus operating companies only be allowed to provide services if they ensure the safety of their personnel, The group also advises bus companies to set up roving security teams and to increase closed-circuit TV surveillance in problem zones.
The Vreeman group also proposes claiming damages from the perpetrators of violence and vandalism. Bus drivers should receive more training in social skills, the group says.
Interior Affairs Minister Guusje ter Horst, who is responsible for public order, says she will implement the recommendations. The group's advice was sought following a number of violent incidents on buses in rural areas. Security levels on regional public bus services have fallen sharply over the past few years. On trains and in urban transport, no such deterioration has been registered.
