Police in Rotterdam harbour have allowed a ship carrying whale meat to leave harbour. Officials investigated the cargo the freighter in the Dutch seaport following a claim by Greenpeace that the ship, the Nyk Orion, was carrying an illegal load of whale meat. According to a police spokesperson, the cargo documents are in order and there is no reason to detain the ship.
Early on Friday morning, Greenpeace activists chained themselves to a container ship in Rotterdam harbour. The activists say the ship is transporting the meat of thirteen fin whales, and are trying to prevent the containers from being shipped to Japan.
Greenpeace is asking customs officials to confiscate the goods, pointing out that fin whales are a threatened species. If the Netherlands facilitates the trade in the whales' meat, the country is contributing to their extinction, the environmentalist group says.
