The authorities of the autonomous republic of Abkhazia have threatened to destroy Georgian ships entering their waters.
Tension between Georgia and Abkhazia increased last month after the Georgian navy refused to allow a Turkish oil tanker into Abkhazian waters. Georgia disputes the sea borders and says vessels cannot visit Abkhazia without a permit. Abkhazian President Sergei Bagapsh has compared the incident to piracy.
The sea borders are monitored by the Russian navy as Abkhazia only has a small naval fleet. Georgia says it will hold Russia responsible for any attacks on its ships.
Abkhazia, backed by Russia, declared independence in 1992. Georgia still regards Abkhazia as its own territory.
