The former chief of the New York police and 9/11 hero Bernard Kerik is facing a four-year prison sentence for corruption and tax fraud.
A US judge convicted him of falsifying his personal tax returns to cover up tax evasion.
He also lied to White House staff about the affair when then President George W Bush wanted to nominate him for the post of Homeland Security chief in 2004. He was forced to withdraw as a candidate for the post when the fraud came to light.
The judge ruled that Mr Kerik was unable to cope with his status as a hero that came with the recognition of his courage during the 2001 attacks on the World Trade Centre in New York.
