At least 18 people were killed and dozens more injured when two commuter trains collided in Belgium early on Monday morning.
The accident occurred in Buizingen near Halle, south of the Belgian capital Brussels. Belgian railways says the two trains crashed head on during the morning rush hour. Although the cause of the accident has not been confirmed, the governor of the province of Flemish Brabant, where the crash occurred, says one of the trains ignored a red signal.
The injured received treatment at the station in Buizingen before being transferred to hospitals throughout the area.
The accident has seriously disrupted rail traffic in Belgium. International Thalys trains between Brussels and Paris have been temporarily cancelled. One Thalys train is stuck en route.
