At least 16 police officers have been killed in two separate attacks on checkpoints in Afghanistan.
Just before sunrise, armed men shot dead eight policemen in an attack on a police checkpoint in the province of Baghlan.
At around the same time, another eight were killed when a police checkpoint in Helmand province was attacked by militants.
The attacks coincide with the arrival of US Admiral Michael Mullen, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. The admiral is in Afghanistan to discuss the new US strategy.
President Barack Obama is sending an extra 30,000 troops to the war-torn country.
