13 die in US army base shooting

Published on 6 November 2009 - 8:41am
More about:

Thirteen people have been killed and 30 injured after a soldier opened fire on colleagues at Fort Hood army base in the United States.

The gunman, Nidal Malik Hasan, a 39-year-old major, used two handguns and was eventually shot himself. He was not killed and is in a stable condition in hospital.

Two other suspects in the case were earlier arrested but army sources now say there was only one gunman.

Major Hasan, who is of Jordanian origin, worked as an army psychiatrist and was about to be deployed to Iraq or Afghanistan. No details about his possible motive have been released, but he is said to have been trying to avoid the deployment.

At a press conference, US President Barack Obama called the drama a horrific outburst of violence.

Fort Hood is the world's largest military base, with about 40,000 people working there.

Dear editor, due to the highly islamophobic discriminative atmosphere in society we live in today, do you think it wise to write the shooters ethnic origin in your article? The shooter is an American citizen, born in the USA. This is not the first nor the last violent crime in America with the open gun laws there. This is also not the first time a person has lost their mind and went on a shooting spree in the United States.
