“Last Moroccan leaves the Netherlands”

Published on : 21 October 2009 - 1:25pm | By Michael Blass
More about:

What if all the Moroccans in the Netherlands were to pack up and leave? This is the question posed by an internet video launched on Tuesday.

A man cycles in his dressing gown to collect his own newspaper from a pile in the street – the Moroccan delivery man has left the country. Streets are strewn with litter, buildings fall into disrepair. Stranded commuters queue for taxis, with no one left to drive them. “Last Moroccan leaves today,” reads the newspaper headline, as a plane overhead flies south.

This is the world envisaged in a video featured on the website munt.nu – one in which everyone of Moroccan descent has left the Netherlands.

Rotterdam football team Feyenoord are league champions, but the city’s Moroccan mayor Ahmed Aboutaleb doesn’t turn up to congratulate them. Meanwhile in Amsterdam, performances by Moroccan stand-up comedian Najib Amhali are cancelled. The video portrays a country with buildings falling into dereliction and endless rows of cars waiting to be repaired.

Nevertheless, the film is not simply a worthy celebration of Moroccan contributions to Dutch society. It also shows bored staff at a deserted social security benefit office left twirling on their chairs and filing their nails. Worst of all, in a country with no Moroccans at the centre of controversy, the Dutch press is struggling to fill its pages. An empty newspaper opinion page desperately appeals to its readers for material.

Sheep
The eight-minute film, entitled Kop of Munt – Heads or Tails – features on the website munt.nu. The Dutch word munt also means mint, a reference to the crucial ingredient in the favourite Moroccan beverage, mint tea. But the people behind the website are keen to stress they are not “businessmen with a share in the sale of mint”. They also deny being the “Silent majority society”, the “Association of Experienced Opinion-holders” or the “Institute for professional provocateurs”. Or, for that matter, victims: “we’ve assigned that role to our sheep”. Rather they describe themselves as “socially engaged Dutch-Moroccan young people bursting with energy and creativity”. But exactly who they are remains a mystery – the makers of both film and website remain anonymous.

Hysteria
Moroccans tend to feature in the Dutch media as young criminals, causing nuisance in the street, hurling abuse at gays and women, and carrying out muggings and robberies. Or indeed as Muslims struggling to integrate, in a debate driven by anti-Islam MP Geert Wilders, leader of the far-right Freedom Party. Mr Wilders has said he would not hesitate to deport Muslims who commit crimes or fail to integrate into Dutch society – and his party is riding high in the polls.

The makers of Heads or Tails say they want to counter the popular view and show that “Moroccan Dutch people are an integral part of society. And that a large section of the Netherlands doesn’t identify with the hysteria surrounding ‘Moroccans’.”

Can’t wait
However, judging by the results of a survey on the website’s homepage, the visitors are not persuaded. They seem far more ready to back Geert Wilders’ viewpoint. “What do you think of the idea of Moroccans leaving the Netherlands?” the survey asked. Based on a total of more than 13,500 respondents, the results were as follows:

"Good, I can’t wait!" 71%

"I’ve got no opinion at all!" 6%

"Bad, Moroccans belong here, full stop!"
23%

The “can’t wait” attitude is echoed on right-wing tabloid-style news website geenstijl.nl, where hundreds of respondents rushed to welcome the idea of a “100% Moroccan-free” Netherlands.

The young Moroccans behind munt.nu might deny being professional provocateurs, but they do seem happy to go on provoking the argument. They have now replaced their survey with a new question: “Who should be the next to leave the Netherlands: (a) Antilleans, Turks and Surinamese, (b) Anyone who wants to, or (c) No one – Moroccans are enough.”

The Moroccans are not bad people by nature, immigrants usually do the dirty low paid jobs the local people won't do because the country has become very prosperous & the standard of living has become better. The NL are different from the UK in that you don't see the same level of urban poverty as you do in the UK, it is actually quite hard to find a rough area, the Belmar is seen by lots of Amsterdamers as a terrible place, actually compared to places like Camberwell & New Cross, it is clean and just ordinary. When the Dutch describe something that is awful to them, to British eyes it doesn't look very bad at all. The NL are also different to the UK in that it is a very very white society, very few Asians, some Indonesian faces, some blacks, Egyptians & Chinese, mainly very white. There is a Dutch mindset that dominates the country, it is usually quite healthy and resfreshing compared to the UK but the lack of understanding that particularly 2nd generation Moroccans might be dis-enfranchised like blacks were in the UK in the 1970s say, is something that they don't understand. If you give people a genuine chance they tend to take it & if you shut them out then they have to resort to crime to get anything out of the society. Saying that they want to impose their religion on society is just incorrect, they should be allowed to keep their culture & religion. I have found the Dutch idea of trying to water all alien cultures down until they become Dutch a little controlling. I don't think they have a lot to complain about in the NL, it's not going to become a whites-only society.

Every society has their share of immigrant workers on whom they get dependent for menial chores...Nothing new! Humans love lording over lesser mortals! You cannot change it!

Not that this is important, but basically this short film is a rip off of "A Day Without A Mexican". Exact same premise, except in the United States and the group to suddenly leave were the Latin American immigrants.

I would refrain taking a stand on Dutch internal customs and social attitudes for a non-citizen is not welcomed to opine because most of the cases that person is lacking the necessary sensitivity and congenital comprehension of the Dutch Psyche. The question thus goes much farther than Morocco, almost Hamletian: to be a Nation or not to be a Nation, that is the question. Do you want to remain Dutch with your History, Culture, Language and Institutions or turn into Multicultural tribalism run by Ali Baba and Solana like was the case with Habsburg Netherlands, Spanish Netherlands, Austrian Netherlands and the eventual Sharia Netherlands. Only you know the answer.

What is disturbing is the core assumption, both in this article and in this film, that the vast majority of Moroccans do menial jobs and that if they went, the streets would be dirty, and nice, clean Netherlands would fall apart. The disenfranchised in any society are the ones that turn to crime, that mug people, that bristle against the accepted norm. Menial jobs are taken by those who have little option to do anything else. There are many, many immigrants in this country who do many other jobs than are mentioned here. Whatever the current debate about immigration, whether those immigrants be muslim, Moroccan, whatever, there is a problem at the heart of this society which is, in my opinion, its refusal to accept things that are not Dutch. I have heard lazy racism bandied around by intelligent people here which would simply not be socially acceptable where I come from. As a foreigner in the Netherlands, I can honestly say that while this country may, historically, have been deemed 'tolerant' I would describe it more as indifferent. What may have been described as 'open-minded' I would classify as uncurious. The Dutch are great in many ways, and of course this is the Netherlands, so the overarching mindset is a Dutch one, and rightly so, but it sure ain't the homeland of the free-thinking. And yes, you may well say, if I don't like it here, go home. I am seriously considering it. And it's not because of the Moroccans.

If the Dutch hate the Moroccans so much, why did you guys let them in & stay in in the first place!?!?!?!?!?!
Anonymous 22 October 2009 - 12:04am
There is for sure a lot wrong with radical fundamental Islamists who bomb, destroy and kill and maim innocent people. Failure to " integrate" into the Dutch society should not be deemed a crime or a reason for deportation.
Cole 21 October 2009 - 11:04pm
There is nothing wrong with Moroccans - there is something wrong with Islamic law being enforced through whatever means on a free society. That's what's wrong - that is what should leave - at least the public sphere - religion and all its laws should be a personal matter. Many are with Wilders to keep it that way... that means western rights and freedoms remain. And Sharia stays in Morocco .. just think though ... if Moroccans could be freed from Islamic law ... in Morocco ... this is my wicked idea !! Bring back the Berber - the Arab is a fiction !!
Anonymous 6 April 2010 - 8:05pm / Finland

There's no sharia in Morocco, what are you talking about?

There are no Islamic laws in Morocco what so ever.

Ejhimmi 21 October 2009 - 9:04pm
This discussion should focus on the behaviors exhibited by Moroccans that native Dutch find objectionable, and then the reasons behind the actions, rather than singling out Moroccans. Are Moroccans overrepresented in crime statistics? If so, why? Can it be completely explained by poverty? Are there no poor Dutch? Do poor Dutch commit the same types of crimes at the same rate? Is there a general disrespect of the law, and authority, by Moroccan immigrants? If so, why? Are Moroccan immigrants being indoctrinated by Islamists into thinking they owe no respect or allegiance to the Netherlands? If so, what should be done? Can anyone really blame native Dutch from not wanting any form of Sharia law implemented in the Netherlands? How would Pakis, Saudis, or Iraqis behave if Europeans flowed into their countries and began forcing them to drink alcohol, eat pork, and wear revealing clothing?
J. van Steenwijk 21 October 2009 - 3:52pm
Yes, there would be some problems when the Moroccans leave, but there would certainly also be less intimidation and crime. During the past years, I've witnessed Moroccan youths steal my car, steal my bicycle, rob my pregnant neighbour, beat up my son, swear at my wife and leave a trail of litter and graffiti when they finally disperse after noisily "hanging around" for an entire evening. Needless to say that I wouldn't shed a tear when they go back to their country. Why can't they behave like the Indonesian, Ghana or Turkish immigrants?
Hiram 21 October 2009 - 6:50pm
"Why can't they behave like the Indonesian, Ghana or Turkish immigrants?"..........Because they are Moroccans! As to the statement "I've witnessed Moroccan youths steal my car, steal my bicycle, rob my pregnant neighbour, beat up my son, swear at my wife and leave a trail of litter and graffiti when they finally disperse after noisily "hanging around" for an entire evening." Question: When they all get deported by Wilders, will the crime level drop in the Netherlands. Who will the Dutch blame then for their crime rates? Once you, the Dutch, became part of the EU, you are no longer Dutch. In time, there will no longer be a Dutch personality. You invited them into your home and now you have to deal with them. Dom't blame all Morrocans for the criminal activities of a few. You might punish the Morrocan criminals by putting them in prison with the Dutch criminals. You let crime and punishment get out of hand and your response is to blame a specific group of people like the Morrocans. Shame on youuuuuuuuuu!
Steve 21 October 2009 - 2:46pm
"Mr Wilders has said he would not hesitate to deport Muslims who commit crimes or fail to integrate into Dutch society". It sounds like the people that are portrayed in this film (or better stated the people missing) are not the people Mr. Wilder's is speaking out against. They are working, and most likely integrated into society. Why would people be against deporting immigrants that commit crimes? As far as the overplayed "racism" excuse for failing to integrate, Indians, Chinese, Vietnamese and other cultures that differ widely from the Dutch culture dont have the same problem. I think the video plays an important reminder to the Dutch (and other Europeans) that not all immigrants are causing problems. It still does not change the fact that radical Imams, their followers, lifetime welfare leaches, and criminals should be deported.
Steve 21 October 2009 - 2:54pm
I would like to add to my comment that Mr. Wilders should deport any immigrant found committing a crime, and not single out a specific nationality or race. We in the West need to stop apologizing for our way of life. Wealth and poverty are not mutually exclusive. We dont have to cause poverty to be wealthy. That being said, it is the fault of the governments (usually dictatorships or some form of strong arm govt) of poor countries that they are poor. That being said we owe them nothing. If you are not a full citizen and you commit a crime...sorry you will be barred entry for life. If your family is here they can visit you or move back to their country of origin. This would be a much stronger deterrent against a life of crime than a typical jail sentence.

Someone should make another video with all non eu products, businesses and people gone out of netherlands and see what happens. And I mean, no more American, Canadian, Moroccan etc and their products, music, movies etc out of the netherlands, including no more middle eastern oil or business. Watch the country fall apart literally. I can just picture this place with only Dutch and EU products.
