In Brussels, Rwandan Ephrem Nkezabera has been sentenced to 30 years in prison for war crimes.
Nkezabera is known as the “genocide banker” for his role in the 1994 Rwandan genocide, as he financed Hutu militias and payrolled a hate radio station.
The Court of Assizes in Brussels found him guilty of an indeterminate number of murders and rapes. It is the first time that rape has counted as a war crime in Belgium
The 57-year-old Rwandan did not attend any of the hearings during his month-long trial. He is being treated for liver cancer.
In 1994, 800,000 people most of them Tutsis were killed by extremist Hutu militias during a massacre which lasted 100 days.
