‘Stop backstreet abortions: change the law’

More about:

Millions of desperate women around the world still end unplanned pregnancies by resorting to backstreet abortions or knitting needles. Worldwide the number of unsafe abortions has risen, a recent study found. The majority of abortions in Africa and Latin America are unsafe. Legalising abortion is the way to save lives, says Women on Waves, a Dutch organisation that campaigns for safe abortion.

Around the world, 43.9 million abortions were carried out in 2008. Almost half of them took place in unsafe conditions, according to research by the Guttmacher Institute and the World Health Organisation (WHO). The total number of abortions has stabilised.

Knitting needles
Rebecca Gomperts of Women on Waves works to provide safe abortions for women in parts of the world where abortion is outlawed. The rise in the number of unsafe abortions doesn’t surprise her. “Particularly in countries where abortion is illegal the procedure is carried out unsafely,” she says. “Unsafely means that women do it themselves by jumping down the stairs, or using knitting needles, or going to someone who’s had no training. But not every illegal abortion is necessarily unsafe.”

For example, abortion can be induced safely by a woman herself using the drug Misoprostol, says Gomperts. “The pills were used to prevent stomach ulcers. But because the authorities now know that Misoprostol can be used for other purposes, women in Thailand, Brazil and the Philippines, for instance, haven’t been able to get them for the past couple of years. Because of that there’s been an increase in the number of unsafe abortions in these countries.”

Complications
One in eight women who undergo an unsafe abortion die, according to WHO figures, and 8.5 million women a year are left requiring medical treatment. Gabie Raven of the Dutch Society of Abortion Doctors has seen it happen in practice. “I’ve worked in Africa myself and if you see the way they go to work with herbs and pots and pans to induce an abortion, it’s obviously unsafe. It’s something that’s always happened. But I’m surprised there’s been no improvement.”

Eight out of ten women in developing countries face strict laws against abortion. Because of the illegality, Gabie Raven says, many abortions take place in dangerous settings. “Even if someone’s trained to do abortions, there’s always a chance of complications. In the Netherlands we’re prepared for it, but with a backstreet abortion it’s a different story.”

Information
Legalisation is essential to stop the number of unsafe abortions from continuing to rise, Gomperts says. “It’s extremely important that abortion is legalised. But that’s a hard thing to achieve. In countries where it’s illegal, you first have to provide women with good information on how they can induce an abortion safely themselves using pills.”

Good information on contraception is also needed to bring down the number of unplanned pregnancies. Dutch Deputy Development Cooperation Minister Ben Knapen sees a role in this for the Dutch government. “More than in other countries, we talk about sensitive matters like abortion and sexuality without taboos. I’ve made sexual health one of my priorities to enable girls and women to make their own choices about reproduction and sexuality. We know that this leads to a fall in unplanned pregnancies, abortions, and maternal mortality.”

No democratic government should say that it's all right to murder innocent life. A human being in the early stages of development is still a human being. If abortion is not "legal" that does not mean it needs to be made "illegal". There are still laws against homosexuality but they are not enforced; it has been "decriminalized." The same should be done with abortion.
This act of murder, sometimes committed in desperation, should be a matter between God and the woman. The fate of her soul is involved. To those who say God does not exist, you will one day find that you are wrong.

Rastaman 23 January 2012 - 3:02am

Homosexuality is only illegal in stupid christian and muslim countries.

Anonymous 20 January 2012 - 6:01pm

All those poor creatures are being murdered because someone does not wish them to be born.Do safe sex, and even better have no sex at all you egoistic, cretine and irresponsible demonic monsters.Animals are divine,in omparison with you, they do not abort.

Nonsensical comment: how many children and adults die every day because of undernourishment, terrorism, war, oppression, diseases, unhealthy habits and so on? And there are plenty of animals that kill and/or eat their own offspring.

saskia 25 January 2012 - 11:18pm

Peter...does it make sense to suggest that killing helpless unborn babies will solve the troubles of this earth ? Does it ? Even if you do not ... did you know that most people derive great joy from from babies & children ? The idea that little babies cause over-population problems , famines etc. is ludicrous ,insane & non-nonsensical...& evil. Find something else to blame for the evils & faults of this world...& pick on something your on size for a change. Find something that can defend itself and are you suggesting that because animals sometimes kill /or eat their offspring that somehow justifies killing the unborn (abortion ) by humans ? Oh yeah...you probably believe we are all related to apes ...don't you ?

Anonymous 20 January 2012 - 9:47pm

Don't procreate children, if you cannot take care of them, and be responsible for them.

Anonymous 20 January 2012 - 8:11pm

Your comment is nonsensical! Animals do not abortus provocatus!

Rastaman 23 January 2012 - 3:06am

No they get slaugthered and served as a good christian meal instead. God made them so they could be killed right?

PeterNY 20 January 2012 - 2:24am / USA

Unfortunately religious fanatics still run the show. Hopefully rationalism will triumph and abortion will be legalized and safe globally. There is already a critical level of over population evidenced by the demise of nature, instability in many countries, undernourishment and record high unemployment.

Shame on you ! Such a culture of death you have become by advocating the killing of the unborn & the elderly. What you have said in not even true.Women today have better access to birth control & are more informed. They don't need Dutch opportunists to roam the globe selling a culture of death .Nederland is now so obsessed with sex ,they think they invented it.The have such a low birth rate because they would rather be "Op Vakantie" .They have major problems now with hooligans who respect nothing & nobody. Teachers, & service providers are frightened & bullied ,nursing home are hell-holes .Pedophilia is rampant & they want the age of consent to be lowered to 12 (maybe it is by now) . What is your salary for such a job as this,Rebecca ? You make your life by promoting death . Shall we discuss the number of helpless babies who die painful deaths every minute somewhere due to abortions ...their skin burned & limbs pulled off .Shall we? At least most women have a choice as to whether or not to have sex. This pompous -self-righteous crusade is nonsense . Stay home Rebecca.

PeterNY 20 January 2012 - 2:32am / USA

You make no sense.
Shame on you ! Such a culture of death you have become by advocating the killing of the unborn & the elderly.
The death of embryos and elderly is not advocated. Abortion happens everywhere and anywhere and it is better to legalize it than deny the facts. The elderly or anyone else for that matter should have control over their own lives. Who are you to tell someone what they should or should not do?

What you have said in not even true.Women today have better access to birth control & are more informed.
You are sadly misinformed. In many countries women do not have access to birth control. Especially now that religious extremism is on the rise again this becomes harder and harder. Many women are not informed at all. Again due to religious extremism that propagates withholding and all kinds of irrational nonsense.

They don't need Dutch opportunists to roam the globe selling a culture of death .
The world is free to anyone so the Dutch or anyone for that matter can broadcast their opinion. You are allowed to state your own opinion as well.

Nederland is now so obsessed with sex ,they think they invented it.The have such a low birth rate because they would rather be "Op Vakantie" .
There is no such obsession: all men and women in the world take an interest in sex. Denying this is hypocritical and leads to denial which causes problems like teenage moms and over population.

They have major problems now with hooligans who respect nothing & nobody. Teachers, & service providers are frightened & bullied ,nursing home are hell-holes .
Most countries do not even have these services and there are problems but those are usually related to behavioral problems because of cultural incompatibility and again over population (e.g. over crowding in low income areas).

Pedophilia is rampant & they want the age of consent to be lowered to 12 (maybe it is by now) .
In most third world countries women are forced into sex and have no rights. Pedophilia is not more rampant than anywhere. There is openness rather than denial as is the case in most countries.

You are very delusional and probably need medication and professional help.

saskia 20 January 2012 - 7:58pm

Peter...are you parrot ?
You may understand paragraphs, but you need to learn how to use quotation marks .I don't have much time today ,but I will say this > I know this article did not address euthanasia...but it is a growing concern in the country & there is a growing lack of respect for life in general. You made some comments that make you sound like a eugenics advocate >(e.g. over crowding in low income areas)...and the following makes you sound like a pervert > (Pedophilia is not more rampant than anywhere. There is openness rather than denial as is the case in most countries.) I am guessing you are single, have no children , you do not live here (but you want to ) & all you know a/b The Netherlands is what you read in RNW.You appear to be a religious bigot & your dream job is working for Zero Population Growth ...eh ?

PeterNY 24 January 2012 - 9:06pm / USA

We will never agree so there is no value to discussing this further.

saskia 25 January 2012 - 11:00pm

I agree with that ...so you were wrong ...& it won't be the first time !
