De bewoners in Caribisch Nederland zijn nog niet bezig met de aanstaande Tweede Kamerverkiezing. Zij mogen voor het eerst meedoen: Bonaire, Saba en Sint Eustatius zijn nu immers onderdeel van het Nederlandse staatsbestel.
De drie gezaghebbers van de eilanden realiseren zich dat er werk aan de winkel is, maar ze hebben nog geen idee hoe Nederlandse verkiezingen in hun werk gaan. Voor gezaghebber Lydia Emerencia op Bonaire is het zelfs de eerste verkiezing die zij die moet organiseren. Zij is pas twee maanden in functie.
“Ik moet me oriënteren, want net als de bevolking hadden we met dit scenario geen rekening gehouden”, aldus Emerencia. Ook gezaghebber Jonathan Johnson op Saba en Gerald Berkel op Sint Eustatius weten nog niets, maar verwachten dat met het team dat al de lokale verkiezingen uitvoert de klus geklaard kan worden.
Kosten
“Ik maak me meer zorgen om de kosten van een ingelaste verkiezing”, aldus Berkel. “Die hebben we namelijk niet begroot en ik kan me voorstellen dat de gedeputeerde van Financiën zich afvraagt wie dat gaat betalen.”
Of de verkiezingen gaan leven bij de bevolking durft geen van de gezaghebbers te zeggen. Volgens Emerencia heeft de val van het Nederlandse kabinet effect op Bonaire, maar “de dagelijkse uitdagingen op het eiland vragen meer aandacht. De afstanden zijn groot en de binding tussen Nederland en Bonaire is er nog niet, van beide kanten niet.”
Campagne
De eilanden beseffen dat ze samen met 16.000 kiesgerechtigden de kiesdeler bij lange na niet halen. Het is nog maar de vraag of politieke partijen of individuele politici campagne komen voeren op de eilanden van Caribisch Nederland.
Politici die naam hebben gemaakt zijn Alexander Pechtold van D66 en Cynthia Ortega Martijn van de Christen Unie. Berkel: “zelfs als deze twee geen campagne voeren, zullen ze stemmen binnen halen omdat ze in het verleden hebben aangetoond de belangen van de eilanden te willen behartigen.”
Gezamenlijke wens
Berkel erkent dat een politieke vertegenwoordiging in Den Haag met het huidige aantal kiesgerechtigden een probleem is, maar dat er bestuurlijk wel een oplossing moet worden gevonden: “Om invloed uit te kunnen oefenen is het wellicht mogelijk om een eigen vertegenwoordiging van de BES-eilanden in Den Haag neer te zetten. Of dat haalbaar is, weet ik niet, maar het is wel onze gezamenlijke wens”, aldus Berkel.

Ronald van Raak (SP) and Ineke van Gent (GroenLinks)have also made a special effort to make sure that the interests of the people in Statia are not forgotten in the Second Chamber. The Government that has now fallen was not good for these islands. Example: what did the Kingdom Representative Mr. Stolte (CDA) reply to the remark that the people in Saba & Statia have to spend an extra US$195 (flying Winair to St. Maarten)when they need a notary or need to make use of their rights as a citizen by going to Court: "If you don't like it, then just leave." !!! And that has been the attitude of the now fallen Government all along. Don't forget: they needed the support of PVV who suggested to put our islands up on Ebay..!
I have taken note of the political situation in the Haque and that elections will be by September 2012. While Hld is so many miles away from us, it is very important for our future that we are involved or informed ourselves of the politics in the Haque. Probably for statia this could be a blessing ib disguise as the mayority of Statia wasn't really please with Den haag; especially when Statia is paying Taxes and can't know how much have been paid by Statia - and that so much tax will be generated by NuStar expansion. And that the Dutch Gov't fell because of money issues - then this is somewhat how we are also feeling when we can't learn how we have paid. I would have appreciated to learn that Wilders ceased negotiations because NuStar expansion is ecologically/ environmentally daming to Statia. His opinion that a 400 millard Euro inkrimping for holland is too much or will throw Holland into a recession. So what good for the goose is also good for the gander, Mr. Wilders. Into the future BES-citizens should pool together to support a candidate for procuring the BES interest in Holland. We are small in number but has to start somewhere, now is the rigth time to start endorsing or courting a dutch candidate to campion BES-issues.
I think despite the fact that many Statians may not be familiar with the various political streams in the Netherlands, that funds were not budgetted for this election,and many other bottlenecks that I can note. I believe that Statians should be made aware of the different Political parties, their ideals and aim and they should participate in this election. We are living in a democratic society and when election is called we need to be given the opportunity to vote. I recognize the concern of the people in authority but we need to find solutions and not look at what is not possible.The local politicians have a role to play in this entire situation. The people in the various communities on Saba, Statia and Bonaire need to become more pro-active and go online and gather information for themselves, to beable to make a choice for whom one wishes to vote for.
