White sharks, black crew in Gansbaai, South Africa

Published on : 21 January 2012 - 9:00am | By Marijke van den Berg (Screenshot: RNW)
More about:

"I don't look at colour,” says Piet Smal in Gansbaai, South Africa. “I only look at capabilities. If people have capabilities, then I want to employ them.” His company, White Shark Adventures, offers tourists the possibility to swim with sharks.

Under the South African government’s black economic empowerment policies, Piet has to employ a certain percentage of blacks. But he’s gone a step further: his boat crew and office staff are almost all black. But Piet is in favour of positive discrimination, only if it doesn’t affect his company’s performance.

I found your blog using Google and I must say this is one of the most informative blogs I have read in a while. I will make sure I come back to read your future posts.
