US confidence in Barack Obama is on the increase again. The president began his term of office on a huge wave of popularity in 2009, but saw the sympathy evaporate in the harsh light of the crisis, and more recently the Gulf of Mexico oil spill.
But he’s now over the dip, because US voters like decisive action – such as his decision to sack General Stanley McChrystal – says Radio Netherlands Worldwide’s overseas commentator Bernard Hammelburg.

Too many borrowers may be unfairly blaming credit scores for their higher-than-expected loan rates or extra credit-card fees, according to a recent working paper.
The real culprit may be your own misunderstanding of how the lending process works, coupled with a failure to conduct adequate research before you apply, suggests the MIT Department of Economics working paper.
The paper, written by a team of Federal Reserve and university researchers led by Sumit Agarwal of the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago, admits a FICO credit score may determine if you're offered a loan. But other factors may contribute more heavily to your rate and fees.
More From MarketWatch.com:
Take a home-equity loan or home-equity credit line: The greatest impact on your annual percentage rate is based on the "loan-to-value ratio," the report said. That's the percentage of the home's appraised value that you're actually borrowing.
Lenders often issue tiered annual percentage rates, based on loan-to-value ratios of 80% or less, 80% to 90% and 90% or more. So if you're shopping lenders, expect any rate you're quoted to be based on your home's loan-to-value ratio.
Too often, the paper indicates, potential borrowers misestimate their home value and find themselves asking lenders the rates for the wrong loan-to-value category. Meanwhile, once you apply for a loan at the higher rate you're quoted, loan officers often have discretion to give it to you -- despite the fact that they typically have access to appraisal information that could place you in the correct loan-to-value ratio category at a lower rate.

silly article....obama and democrats are still sliding....mid-term elections in 3 months and no democrats running for re-election want to be seen with obama - that should tell you everything you need to know...the last 4 he campaigned for all lost...latest generic polls say republicans ahead by 5%, and there is a great chance they will retake the House, outside chance they take the Senate....
obama has shown no respect for the rule of law, no interest in the unemployment rate, and suspicious little interest in the gulf oil spill as this was an area of the country that voted against him....he claims he doesn't care if he's a one term president and i think the voters will be happy to show him the door....its clear now that he is at the very least a socialist and might even have further leftist leanings than that, which should surprise no one if you consider the company he keeps....he really does hate the country as far as i can tell, which is why his goal was to "fundamentally change" the U.S. - i suspect this has something to do with his formative years occuring in Indonesia....he's never done an honest day's work in his life, was likely an affirmative action recipient in college, as was his wife and had some fake "community organizer" "job" and his wife still hated the country even though she "worked" at a hospital in a "community relations" capacity, saw her salary doubled or tripled to $300,000 a year when obama became a senator, and then the "job" disappeared when she left...imagine that....i'm sure it was an incredibly difficult and strenuous job at $300,000/year and then the hospital just didn't need that position any longer...that's the kind of trash that occupies the gov't all over the world these days as nothing is based on qualifications...
Obama did do a change. He did want you really know what kind of a change he meant. He is no fool. He is trying to bankrupt the country so it will lead into a one world government. No, he knows exactly what he is doing. It's the people who haven't caught on yet. He is set on bringing America to her knees in everyway he can. No idiot would have run a country the way he has with half a brain. You have the big shots behind him like George Soros pulling the strings Obama is just their puppet. (One-world Government) this is what they want and after.
Before he was elected, he talked of ending the war in Iraq, and closing Guantanamo, and of bringing hope and work to the US population.
He either lied, or is incompotent and indifferent.
He has blood, not only on his hands, but running from the corners of his twisted grin.
...A murderous piece of misanthropic trash.
The US is finished as a superpower, and has become a disproportionate drain on global resources....Obama is just another autocue president, he just makes the announcements, whilst the bankers and militaries tell him what to do.
It was hard to remember during the election just how deeply the Cheney regime had damaged the country and how hard it would be for anyone to start to make things right. It wasn't just the intentional fiascos like Iraq, which now costs me about a nickel for every dollar I make. Even deeper wounds were in the shaky credit market, huge run ups in prison population, and now - we learned the hard way - an energy business without oversight or regulation. Halliburton and News Corporation paid good money to get their men in power, and they had nearly a decade to wrest the value from our houses, the worth of our retirement plans, and the modicum of international goodwill we still enjoyed after 9/11.
If this summer is any indication, at least some of the conditions that we need to do business are returning: capital markets are less blocked, the yuan is better balanced, and we might even get a more open immigration policy so that we can hire educated, motivated people to do hard work in our most productive companies. Thank goodness we had at least a few months of a Congress willing to pass pro-business, pro-growth legislation like the health bill.
We know that - at least by Dutch standards - the American system looks crusty and anaemic. But keep in mind that we have a two-party system in almost all of our states, a wealth gap that rivals Brazil's, rampant religious meddling in government, and a very, very vigorous faction on the far right that has spent decades padding their war chests, even when they aren't in the White House. Obama is not a dream come true, but at least he is helping to wind down the nightmare.
The main problem is the polarity. I voted for Obama and am EXTREMELY disappointed. He promised deficit cuts and within 5 months of taking office increased the deficit by 1.5 Trillion dollars. When we voted for Obama we unknowingly voted for the same spending habits that have pushed IL, CA, NY, etc. to the brink of bankruptcy. His pro-business bills seem to levy more and more taxes on individuals and businesses. I agree much of the reforms in the health care bill were needed but for a man that promised "no more earmarks" he sure has signed a bill with a bunch of goodies for his closest friends (and seems to every time he signs a bill).
If he came clean and told the truth during his campaign, people could have weighed the pros and cons of electing him. Because he has shown he can not be trusted (mostly in the spending department) I dont think I can vote for him again, regardless of what he says, during the next election. If we keep increasing our deficit at this rate the US could end up like Greece. With how Greece effected global markets imagine what a US default would do. It would be a domino effect of toppling economies, and a global depression that would make the "great depression" look like the roaring 20s. It is a risk that the US simply can not take, for the sake of American citizens, and every person around the world.

Obama was elected on the promise of "change". Well, we have change concisting of someone who is clueless about any business or common sense. most of the people around him have never had a real job in the private sector let alone meeting a payroll. As a small bisness person I can tell you that this administration consist or personnel that have never known what it is live working for the private sector. As most of my friends I can't wait to vote the whole bunch out of office.
Obama is the worst president we have had and I can hardly wait for 2012 to come fast enough. High unemployment, massive corruption, high spending, high taxes, all classic cases to throw this useless good-for-teleprompting-President out once and for all.
Obama's election will go down in history as one of the United State's most historic moments. There was so much joy in the US that we had finally turned a corner in our racially troubled past.
While on the one hand, there was so much dislike for Republicans after Bush, you could say just about any Democrat could win; on the other hand - honestly there was a certain amount of worry that the US could ever elect a black president.
But even by the time the inauguration was held, there were political observers who were quietly saying his presidency was doomed. The financial meltdown has been so costly and has eroded so much confidence, it has been difficult to get the economy back on track. The reasons for this are long, but ultimately, it will be Obama that will take the blame. And that is too bad.
I wouldn't suggest for a minute that he has done everything right, or has lived up to the very high expectations that voters set for him. But you have to be blind not to see the immense gains made around the world in how the US is viewed. Dutch or any european observers of US politics may know a funny thing about Obama. He was and is widely criticized by the Right for being cooperative and open to european countries and working to repair relations that suffered under Bush. This is regarded as "weakness" by our Right Wing and they seem to prefer the insulting, and embarrassingly ignorant practices from the previous 8 years.
One of the US's biggest challenges is our continued isolation. Even in the age of the internet and the global economy, much of the US has a terribly isolationist mindset. Keep in mind that Obama's opposition, McCain chose a Vice Presidential running mate in Sarah Palin who had never traveled outside the US except to visit the troops in US Army bases, and she had to get her first passport in order to do so. To the average european this must be shocking, but to many in the US this is perfectly fine, because again, their understanding of global economies and politics is very, very narrow.
So, Obama's challenges are primarily domestic, but there is also an underlying issue of helping the US to become a better world partner and ally.

Your American cousins and friends must be either 1) Here illegally waiting for amnesty 2) Collecting massive government payouts for doing nothing 3) Bleeding heart liberals/communists breathless with anticipation for the coming destruction and government takeover of the American economy courtesy of "dear leader" obama. NO ONE (save the 19% of die hard liberals) is impressed with this president, his administration, or the Democratic lead congress. The only place obama is going "back" to is Chicago where he belongs. Sadly it will take another 2 years to send him there.
Americans learn to work together and you will be where you want instead of critizing your leaders. For God and My country Uganda.
Only those who live in another country other than the US would say, "Obama is back."
Who have you interviewed? Obama is widely disliked EXCEPT among a small coterie of those who benefit from his position. Most Americans view him as incompetent, corrupt and deceitful. You might want to visit this site: worldreports.org and learn about the CMX lawsuit and how Obama is being blackmailed by the Bush family.
Its so sad....all of us that supported him and gave money are more than disappointed with teleprompter obama. He has done NOTHING that he said he was going to do.. Forget the up and down (i don't believe the up part of your article)...he will most certainly be a one term president....and I can't wait.
That's odd most people I know are disturbed by the silencing of McChrystal.
My American cousins and friends are saying the same thing -- Obama is back!
Mary please tell your cousins and friends to take their heads out of the sand. (I have to say sand, but wish i could say the body part)
