More about:

Kevin Abdoelkariem has Surinamese-Hindustani roots. He's of Muslim origin and he's gay. Kevin decided to take part in Mister Gay 2012 Awards, an annual event held in the Netherlands, because he wanted to be a role model for other young men who are struggling with their sexual identity.

Kevin knows all too well that homosexuality and religion don't always go hand in hand. But he says that, even though he is Muslim, his immediate family supported him when he came out. "My family didn't have problems with it, but I have relatives who would never accept it."

Another finalist in this year's Mister Gay Awards, who is also Muslim, had to withdraw at the last moment because he received threats from his family.

Kevin hopes that by talking about homosexuality and approaching it in a positive manner, he will be able to help other young people who are struggling with their feelings. Kevin finished third in the competition.
