Dutch politicians of immigrant background campaign for preference votes

Published on : 5 September 2012 - 3:33pm | By RNW Africa Desk (Photo: NOS)
More about:

None of the major parties contesting next week's parliamentary elections in the Netherlands has candidates from immigrant backgrounds highly placed on their electoral lists. This means it’s unlikely any such candidates will win a seat – unless they can persuade voters to select them personally, rather than simply ticking the name at the top of the list.

Aspiring politicians of Surinamese, Turkish and Moroccan background are thus campaigning hard, trying to persuade the electorate to give them a preference vote.

The total number of eligible voters of non-Western backgrounds in the Netherlands is enough to account for 11 seats in parliament.

love the words in the song its so true we need to wake up and unite. We have soo much at our disposal and all the grave porlbems that we face as a continent can only be solved if we can believe in th potential we have. For me african freedom day should about celebrating wat young and vibrant africans are achieving. How were getting out of th bondage of a poverty mindset. Wake up africa indeed.
