Afrikaner singer Michael sings funny-sounding songs

Published on : 23 January 2012 - 9:00am | By Marijke van den Berg (Screenshot: RNW)
More about:

Michael Geist sings in Afrikaans, but because his music is modern, he thinks will be more popular among the Dutch than among South Africans. The Dutch will probably find his songs funny, he thinks, but he suspects that Dutch people won’t have trouble understanding them because of the similarities between the two languages.

Michael Geist’s real name is Michael Smit. His mother has Dutch roots. Her ancestors arrived in South Africa around 1800.

He and his guitarist Freddy Terblanche play a special acoustic version of his song “Truispieeltjie”, which is Afrikaans for “rear view mirror” for Radio Netherlands Worldwide.
