In a continent where most people own mobile phones, simple things such as sanitary towels are still taken as a luxury. Many girls in Africa skip more than a full month of school because they cannot afford sanitary towels or tampons at the time of their menstruation.
Instead, they use and reuse old unhygienic rags. It is also taboo in some African cultures to speak about menstruation. In this programme, we try to break this taboo. We speak with the girls who are affected and we hear about simple and affordable sanitary pads that could be a solution to this problem.
