Bridges With Africa - 03 July 2009

On air: 2 July 2009 22:00 - 9 July 2009 22:00

More about:

This week on Bridges With Africa it's school dinners African style...We explore how food is boosting education in Burkina Faso

In Video on the Radio, we go to the northern Sahel region in Burkina Faso where classes across schools are full at the beginning of the year, and empty out as the school year continues. Pupils become shepherds or farm hands, while some girls are pulled out by parents who marry them off.

We ask if celebrities can save Africa or if they should just stay at home...And there's a report on the ins and outs of fair trade.

In the music corner, we have delectable music with soothing sounds from Guinea!

So tune in to Bridges With Africa, here on Radio Netherlands Worldwide.

I think, the food for class strategy isn't a good idea. Parents should be told the benefits of education and the government should act responsibly. In Karamoja, the semi arid north east of Uganda; the World Food Programme offers food to the nomads (Karimajong) but it gives priority to school going children, well this is working now but can it be sustained? Iam from that side of the country and my parents were never 'paid' or lured with food to take me to school, so i believe there are parents who can still do that if the government subsidies education.
