Four Dutch hospitals are launching a new study for medical students who want to become a so-called hospital doctor.

The study, due to start in September, is intended for recently graduated doctors keen to work in a hospital but not in any particular specialism. Such hospital doctors will perform the simpler kind of procedures, which don’t require the expertise of a specialist but are not allowed to be done by nurses. Hospital doctors will assist patients before and after surgery and will evaluate risk factors ahead of an operation and afterwards will oversee the administration of fluids. They will focus on elderly patients in particular, as hospitals are increasingly treating older and frailer patients.
