Rotterdam's Erasmus University once again suspects a professor of committing fraud.
The Dutch daily newspaper NRC Handelsblad reports that the school will annouce its suspicions later on Monday. The Belgian professor of consumer behaviour Dirk Smeesters is the researcher in question. He has resigned from the University. Last year, another professor at the Erasmus University was caught committing fraud.
A so-called integrity commission has been reviewing Smeester's academic research. The commission's report will be presented today. Smeesters has worked since 2007 at the Rotterdam School of Management, which is a part of the Erasmus University. Last year, Smeesters was promoted to professor.
In the past year, a number of other cases of reseach fraud have come to light. A researcher in Tilburg, Diederik Stapel, appears to have fabricated research data for years. Also, at the UMC St. Radboud in Nijmegen, two teachers have been accused of tampering with their research findings.
