Modern Dutch slavery – people trafficking

Published on 18 October 2011 - 1:38pm
More about:

Dutch consumers have little idea that modern forms of slavery are going on in the Netherlands.

Thousands of men, women and children are the victims of people traffickers and end up in the Netherlands every year, reports FairWork – a group set up by charities OxfamNovib and Humanitas.

The migrants aren't just being forced to work as prostitutes in the Netherlands. Many are put to work as cheap labour in the agricultural, catering and hotel sectors.

FairWork has chosen today, European Anti-Trafficking Day, to launch its campaign Modern slavery, closer than you think.

A quarter of the people interviewed for FairWork said people trafficking was an international problem, and talked about Asia and Africa. The survey indicates that only one in ten Dutch people are aware that there are victims in the Netherlands.

Nearly 90 percent of those surveyed said the government should get tough and tackle the problem. However, one-third of respondents still said they understood companies choosing to use the cheapest labour available.
