Dutch PM hesitates over election date

Published on 26 April 2012 - 11:07pm
More about:

Prime Minister Mark Rutte has asked MPs whether it would be a good idea to hold the parliamentary elections on 5 September instead of a week later, on 12 September.

On Tuesday, Mr Rutte agreed with parliament to hold elections on 12 September. However, the Dutch budget day 'Prinsjesdag' falls just six days later, on 18 September. In that case, budget day will be held with the old parliament as the new MPs will not have been installed until after the third Tuesday in September (traditionally budget day).

Rutte hopes to find broad support in parliament. The cabinet will decide the definitive date on Friday.
