The 2010 FIFA World Cup kicks off in South Africa on June 11, 2010. Radio Netherlands Worldwide brings you a series of video interviews of African soccer players playing in the Eredivisie, the Dutch first division.
These players come from the five Sub-Saharan African countries qualified for the World Cup: Ivory Coast, Ghana, Nigeria, Cameroon and South Africa.
We begin this series with the South African Bernard Parker. Only 24 years old, this rising star plays for the Dutch club FC Twente, which has every chance this year of winning for the first time in its history the Dutch league.
In this exclusive interview for RNW, Bernard Parker says that the Bafana-Bafana, South Africa's national team, has a good chance of reaching the second round in the World Cup.
Our goal is to be able to go past the group stage. Because after this, anything is possible…
It’s true that we are playing at home and the home country has to do well. So we have the pressure.
When it comes to who is going to be the future World Champion, Parker has this to say:
You never know… there are strong teams. My favourites are Spain and Brazil. They have won a lot of their qualifying games. And this says a lot.
This young player feels good in the Netherlands and likes the Dutch people.
They are nice people who always look for the positiveness in others. This is why I like living in the Netherlands.
But when asked about what is the worst part of living in the country, with a big laugh, he says:
It's so serious. Everything is done so seriously!
