White House upbeat on economic measures

Published on 11 September 2009 - 7:44am
More about:

The White House says its package of measures to stimulate the United States economy has produced 1.1 million jobs. The administration is forecasting economic growth of three percent for the third quarter.

President Barack Obama has earmarked a total of 787 billion dollars to help boost the economy. By the end of last month, 150 billion dollars of it had been used to ease the tax burden on people and businesses in the US.

Critics of the stimulation package say that, despite all the money being pumped into the economy, unemployment has risen to nearly ten percent. The administration counters that the problem would have been much worse without the cash injections.
