The High Court in Rwanda's capital, Kigali, fixed an appeal date for the jailed opposition leader Victoire Ingabire earlier today. According to Ingabire's lawyer, Mr. Gatera, her imprisonment is unlawful and she should be released when the appeal is heard on Monday, 1 November 2010.
In an exclusive interview with Radio Netherlands earlier this evening, Mr Gatera explained that Mrs Ingabire is upset at her imprisonment but determined and courageous to fight the charges against her. Mr Gatera hopes to convince the court that the testimonies used in the original trial were from unreliable witnesses and the incriminating documents which were produced by the prosecution were fakes.
According to sources within Mrs Ingabire's United Democratic Forces party (which has not been officially recognised by the Rwandan government), the Rwandan Police raided her home earlier today and house staff and colleagues were brutalized. Although Mr Gatera was unable to corroborate the police raid he did confirm that Ingabire was transferred to a different prison and can receive visitors tomorrow.
