Victoire Ingabire arrested again

Published on : 14 October 2010 - 4:57pm | By RNW Africa Desk (Photo: AFP)
More about:

Victoire Ingabire has been arrested at her house in Kigali on Thursday around 1.15pm local time, sources have confirmed to Radio Netherlands

Ingabire is detained at the Kicukiro police station in Kigali. A police spokesperson told Radio Netherlands that Ingabire will be interrogated by the Kigali police. She is suspected of forming a terrorist organisation, amongst other counts.

The timing of her arrest remains unclear. Sources say that the operation is orchestrated by the Rwandan president Kagame. Although the president was re-elected with overwhelming margins, Kagame feels isolated due to the publication of a damning UN report earlier this month. In the report, the Rwandan army is blamed for the crimes against humanity that took place in the eastern Congo provinces, after the 1994 genocide.

Ingabire is the head of the United Democratic Forces, a party formed in exile but not registered. On April 21 she was also arrested on counts of denying the 1994 genocide and collaborating with a terrorist organisation. She was released on bail a day later.

She will be killed as many others. Kagame has no fear, he can kill any one. In Rwanda when you have a different point of view about any thing you are taken to jail or killed. It's like in North Korea. Ingabire is courageous, she has inspired so many young guys. Kagame is stupid, he shlould learn from history. It's not by killing or sending to jail politicians that he will stay forever. One day, he will be taken to court about all his crimes.

Thank you for your comments. Indeed, the word ‘abducted’ is a wrong representation of the facts. That's why RNW Africa has changed the language in the article.

Like precious colleague mentioned, this journalist is simply confusing. He's been told that she arrest due terrorism and he goes ahead to mention that reasons for arrest remain unclear. What more clarity does he want. People search door news to be guided on world affairs and journalist in most cases shape opinion.

However these opinions when it comes to Africa rules change. These people simply right hearsay. Rumors and misleading statements are order of the day.

I am a follower of regional politics, this lady they keep saying was in exile for 16years simply lived in the same Netherlands on her choice. She didn't run from any threat. We may need to have word exile defined.

In many articles she is referred to as prominent or strong opposition. This is a lady that lived out of Rwanda since before genocide. Many things have change for who do or don't appreciated the change. The point here is that she has no constituency whatsoever. While in the so called exile she never kept up with Rwandan people by visiting or otherwise but she just because she mentioned she was to run for politics she's called the great names for an opposition.

Truth said, if it wasn't for western media's misleading people she would be like me or you walking unnoticed on the streets.e

So dear reporter says news as is not rumored or you may wish it or unresearched.

Try reporting that the terror suspect in Netherlands is arrested for unknown reasons.

Thank you

Ingabire's residence was under heavy surveillance already. One can fear the worst now for this courageous woman. Having waited this long to jail her means a dreadful decision has been taken and is about to be executed.
The Netherlands, one of the most generous and freedom loving country on Earth should take this at heart. Maybe I am wrong. I've been wrong before. But not about Rwanda and President Kagame.

There is nothing courageous about this woman. She is only trying to take Rwanda back to what it was 16 years ago. What do you guys really think this woman can do for Rwanda? How much do you guys know about Rwanda? Do you have a clear understanding of what RPF, President Kagame and his government have done for Rwanda? Stop wasting your time trying to take us back, cause you will never succeed. And after all, why do you support a terrorist? We are getting fed up of your nonsence.

I feel obliged to support the reporter of Netherlands radio who is informing the public of the arrest of one of rare Rwandan opposition leaders, Ms. Victoria Ingabire Umuhoza arrested for just being a main opposition leader. She is just following in prison another one, Mr. Deo Mushayidi, who recently was taken into hidden place to probably be eliminated and his life was somehow saved by a quick intervention of the international community; mainly from all human rights organisations such as Amnesty international, CLIIR, Human rights watch and many more. All of these are being dragged into one of the Rwandan torturous prison for the only crime of belonging to the opposition party. The only tiny numbers of other opposition leaders, including that of Green party, Mr. Frank Habineza and PSI, Mr. Bernard Ntaganda, have also been given a dead line to be killed. I am writing to fully support your article that discloses the intention of the Kagame government to eliminate anyone who dare opposing him. I would ask everyone to use the means in his/her capacity to intervene to stop such inhuman acts which were not expected to happen in this era of the 21st century.
Kind regards,
A. Kamana

Dear Editor for Radio Netherlands, after reading your article on the radio's website am forced to react. Its unbelievable for a journalist, from any reputable media house to be so unbalanced as indicated by the words you use in your article!! How do you say Ingabire was arrested by police from her house and then later on say she was abducted! The Police can't abduct, because they arrest with an arrest warrant! And indeed your choice of words also indicate lack of understanding of issues here in Rwanda. You say the reasons of her arrest remains unclear, yet the police have told the press here in Kigali that she was arrested on suspicion of forming a terrorist group! come on better style up if you want to be taken seriously by people who read the Radio's articles and even listen to it.
