A powerful and vibrant show by Uganda’s marginalised ethnic group, the Karamojong defied stereotypes and showed the region’s true colors.

The people of Karamoja are often described as being 'backward' and 'traditional'. But last week the Karamajong had the opportunity to shed a positive light on their ethnic identity through ‘The Colours of Karamoja’ fashion show, an event organised by Kampala’s cultural haven, MishMash. Together with the International Organisation for Migration, Karamoja showed off colourful materials to the outside world.
Through digital art, dance performances, a photo exhibition and fashion show, the Karamojong showcased their social culture, love of bright colours and physical adornment. Somehow all these ‘traditional’ assets came across as rather futuristic and proved that Karamoja is perfectly capable of defining itself.
This series of photos below shows Karamojong models, who radiate energy and power as they command the catwalk. The dark skin tones and bright colours create a striking contrast. Some of the women have been beautified with scars on their faces.
