Senegal: loyalists bomb rebels

Published on 8 September 2009 - 10:58am
More about:

A military jet belonging to the Senegalese army bombed the positions of Casamance former rebel movement, MFDC, on Friday for killing a loyalist soldier. The strikes hit part of Casamance regional capital, Ziguinchor, where the former rebels are believed to have a stronghold.

The air attack followed the death on Thursday of a loyalist soldier who was wounded after an attack that the military blamed on members of MFDC.

Friday's bombing is the latest sign of renewed hostilities between the MFDC and Senegalese security forces in the region, which was ravaged by 20 years of conflict.

On August 21, local police reported several clashes between the army and ex-rebels in Casamance.

The MFDC – Casamance Movement of Democratic Forces - launched an armed uprising in 1982, but signed a significant peace deal with the Senegalese government in 2004.
