Senators: 'Nigerian president must go'

Published on : 27 January 2010 - 11:52am | By RNW Radio Netherlands Worldwide
More about:

74 Nigerian senators want President Umaru Yar‘Adua to step down from office, the Nigerian newspaper The Vanguard reported, quoting sources in the Senate

Senators will gather for a debate today to decide whether President Yar'Adua is fit to hold office.

President Yar'Adua has been absent from his country for months receiving treatment for a heart condition in Saudi Arabia, but there have been few updates on his health.

Given the almost total paralysis of the institutions, the Federal High Court of Nigeria gave the government 14 days, until February 5, to decide whether President Yar'Adua should stay on.
